Digital Radiographs

Digital X-rays are an important part of understanding your child’s dental health. Some problems inside the teeth, gums, or jaw may not be visible during a regular check-up, and X-rays help us detect those hidden issues early. They allow us to spot cavities, track tooth development, and even see how permanent teeth are forming beneath the surface.

At Dr. Robert Peracchia, DDS (West End Avenue Pediatric Dentistry), we use digital radiography technology, which offers clear images with much less radiation compared to traditional X-rays. The system uses special sensors and filters that focus only on the area we need to examine, keeping exposure low and safe for your child. We also use protective shields for added safety.

Additional Benefits:

  • Digital images are available instantly and can be shared easily with you.
  • They help us explain what we see and why certain treatments might be needed.
  • The process is quick, comfortable, and efficient for young patients.

Optical Scanner

An optical scanner is a modern tool that helps us create a digital model of your child’s mouth without using sticky or messy materials. Instead of taking a traditional mold, we use a small handheld device, often called a “wand,” that gently scans your child’s teeth and gums.

This scanner takes thousands of images in just a few minutes to build a 3D picture of the mouth. It’s simple, clean, and much more comfortable, especially for kids who may not like gooey impressions. Digital scans are highly accurate and can be used to make custom-fit mouthguards, retainers, night guards, and other appliances.

Why It’s Great for Kids:

  • No uncomfortable trays or materials in the mouth
  • Faster process and easy to repeat if needed
  • Real-time images help us plan treatments more precisely
  • Great for children undergoing orthodontic care

Intraoral Cameras

Intraoral cameras help us take clear, detailed pictures inside your child’s mouth using advanced sensors and lighting. These images let us spot small issues like cracks, stains, early cavities, or other changes that can be hard to see with the naked eye. The pictures appear instantly on a screen, helping parents and children understand exactly what’s happening with their oral health. These cameras also make it easier to explain treatment options and keep track of changes over time.

Benefits Include:

  • Spotting small cracks, stains, and early cavities
  • Visual aids for education and treatment tracking
  • Better patient involvement and understanding

ICON (Infiltration Concept)

The ICON system is a gentle, drill-free way to stop early tooth decay, especially between teeth. It treats cavities in their very first stage, before they turn into bigger problems and without the need for anesthesia or removing healthy enamel.

If caught early, this approach allows us to protect more of the natural tooth and avoid traditional fillings. ICON is safe, comfortable, and especially helpful for kids who may be nervous about dental treatments. It’s a quick, effective option that supports a more conservative approach to care.

Benefits Include:

  • Stops early cavities before they grow
  • Comfortable and stress-free
  • Ideal for children nervous about traditional dental tools

The Wand® STA

The Wand® STA is a modern way to give local anesthesia in a gentle and comfortable manner. Instead of a traditional syringe, this small, pen-like device uses computer technology to slowly and precisely deliver numbing medication. Most children don’t even realize they’re getting a shot, which helps reduce anxiety and discomfort. Because it looks less intimidating and feels much gentler, it’s a great tool for easing nerves during dental visits and making treatment easier for both kids and parents.

Benefits:

  • Gentle, pain-free numbing
  • Reduces anxiety and discomfort
  • Perfect for young or nervous children

Nitrous Oxide

For patients with dental anxiety or longer procedures, we offer nitrous oxide sedation—a safe, mild sedative approved by the American Dental Association.

How It Helps:

  • Keeps kids calm and comfortable
  • Quick onset and wears off fast
  • Minimal side effects
  • Suitable for children with strong gag reflexes, low pain tolerance, or special needs
After treatment, we administer oxygen for 3–5 minutes to flush out the gas. Kids can usually return to normal activities right away.
